Jay Summerville is General Counsel to the firm and a member of the firm's Business Litigation practice group. He practices primarily in the areas of litigation, including commercial, banking, antitrust and intellectual property law. 

Actively involved in the defense of a broad range of complex commercial and business disputes, Jay counsels clients in issues regarding contracts, unfair business practices, intellectual property, secured lending, class action, antitrust, lawyer malpractice and public law.

Serving as General Counsel to the firm, Jay has broad counseling responsibilities. He guides his fellow attorneys in loss prevention; conflicts of interest; ethics issues resolution; and improvement, education and compliance with firm policies. Frequently, he provides new lawyer and lateral orientation and training; and internal education on ethics, conflict avoidance, law firm best practices and representation in external vendor and third party claims and suits. He also represents firm attorneys in external proceedings; supervises internal investigations of ethical, legal or impairment issues involving firm lawyers and staff; and represents the firm in responding to subpoenas, lawsuits, sanctions, motions and client complaints.

Background

Prior to joining the firm, Jay was in private practice for a year in New York State. Before that, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Gerald M. Smith of the Missouri Court of Appeals. He has practiced with Armstrong Teasdale (and a predecessor merged firm) since 1977.
