In the environmental area, Winston handles transactions involving environmental risks and renewable energy, and litigation addressing environmental liabilities, energy projects and mining. He manages matters such as Brownfield redevelopment projects, CERCLA and Natural Resource Damages litigation, exposure to hazardous substances, renewable energy projects, emissions trading, and investigations by the Environmental Protection Agency and by state environmental agencies.
Winston has been involved in a number of high-profile, high-stakes and notable lawsuits in the St. Louis area. His litigation experience extends from commercial lawsuits in the mining industry to bankruptcy adversary proceedings, and from legal malpractice cases to religious disputes. The positive results he has obtained for clients have been featured in articles and, in some cases, advocated for by editorial boards, in publications such as the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune, Huffington Post, National Catholic Reporter and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, among others.
Outside of his legal practice, Winston has performed as a professional clarinetist both as a solo recitalist and with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra and the Altgeld Chamber Players. He remains active in community arts organizations, serving on boards and committees for the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Southern Illinois University, Prison Performing Arts, the Carterville Heritage and Preservation Foundation, and the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra.
