Hillary Schumaker Named Director of Armstrong Teasdale’s Professional Advancement of Women Program

December 4, 2014 Press Releases

Hillary Bean Schumaker, a partner in Armstrong Teasdale’s St. Louis office, has been named director of the firm’s Professional Advancement of Women Program (PAW). The program, which was founded in 1998, was one of the first of its kind in St. Louis and has served as a model for other area law firms. PAW works to promote and support the advancement and inclusion of women in the workplace, in the profession and in the community.

An avid supporter of PAW, Schumaker will oversee efforts aimed at creating a positive and supportive environment for women lawyers through mentoring, networking and educational opportunities. PAW also strives to strengthen existing relationships with women clients and prospects as well as forge new relationships between professional and executive women in the community. Schumaker succeeds St. Louis Partner Martha “Marty” Hereford.

“Hillary’s enthusiasm, creativity and foresight will be a great asset to PAW,” said Michael Chivell, managing partner. “In addition to being an excellent attorney, Hillary is well-respected throughout the firm for her leadership abilities and willingness to assist other lawyers.”

Chivell added that the firm has a long history of hiring and promoting women attorneys, beginning in early 1980s, before many other firms would do so.

“Today, women play key roles at Armstrong Teasdale,” he said. “For example, a woman is the firm’s General Counsel and there are women leading our practice areas and programs and serving on our Operations Committee.

Schumaker, who has launched several development programs since joining the firm in 2005, said she looks forward to helping colleagues enhance their professional skills.

“It is an honor and privilege to chair the PAW program and I am excited to lead an amazing group of top notch women lawyers,” Schumaker said. “This will be a wonderful opportunity to engage my passion for the women’s initiative and mentoring other women lawyers."

A member of the firm’s Financial and Real Estate Services practice group, Schumaker guides clients throughout the country in real estate transactions of all sizes. She focuses on office, retail and industrial leasing, real estate financing and the purchase and sale of commercial property. She was chosen by the Super Lawyers rating service as a 2014 Rising Star for her real estate work.

In addition to her practice, Schumaker is a member of the firm’s Diversity, Associates, Hiring and Summer Program Committees. She also heads Armstrong Teasdale’s campaign to fund the firm’s Michael C. Tramble Memorial Scholarship at the University of Missouri School of Law. This annual scholarship, which honors a fallen colleague, is available to minority students.
