Remembering William H. Webster
We are saddened to learn of the passing of William H. Webster, a distinguished alum of Armstrong Teasdale and one of the most remarkable public servants in American history. A St. Louis native, Judge Webster held the unique distinction of being the only person to lead both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency. He was appointed FBI Director in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter and CIA Director in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan.
Webster was a graduate of Amherst College and Washington University School of Law, as well as a United States Navy veteran, having served in both World War II and the Korean War. He began his law career at Armstrong Teasdale in 1950, where he practiced until 1959, then again from 1962 to 1970. After his tenure with the firm, he went on to serve as a federal district judge and later on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit before his historic appointments in Washington.
Judge Webster undoubtedly left an enduring mark on our firm, the legal profession and American history. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Read more about the remarkable life and legacy of William H. Webster in his obituary from the New York Times.
