A member of Armstrong Teasdale’s Intellectual Property practice group, Rich Thomas advises emerging and mature businesses on the development and leveraging of technology. His main focus is on the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications.

Rich assists in the preparation of non-infringement and invalidity opinions, and patentability, due diligence and patent landscape analyses. In these matters, he helps clients in pre-litigation enforcement of patent rights by performing initial infringement analyses, providing tailored patent enforcement strategies, preparing cease and desist letters and negotiating settlement agreements.

Joining his interests in engineering with that of law and the addition of his corporate and military background gives Rich a heightened perspective when working with his clients. In a variety of fields, he gets to witness the cutting edge of technology as he guides inventors through the patent application process. For each, he proficiently writes his way into the blank spaces to define boundaries, include alternatives and watch for pitfalls.

Background

Rich formerly served as project manager for GE Automation Services where he estimated jobs of various sizes and handled proposals and contracts. He was also the outage director, operations director and project manager for Illinois Power and was a naval nuclear propulsion officer for the U.S. Navy.
