Before that, he owned and operated Graham Law Offices in St. Louis, where he represented clients in various legal matters including contract disputes, bankruptcy proceedings, criminal defense and family law. A native of South Carolina, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1974 and served until 1978. He was an active member of the Navy reserves from 1984 until 2013, serving as a supply corps officer from 1989 to 2013.
